Album Reviews

If you’ve been listening to 99X the past few years, you’re probably familiar with Manchester Orchestra. Or, perhaps you ventured out to Unplugged in the Park this year to see Connor Christian& The Southern Gothic. If you dig either of these bands, check out one of their former opening acts (and Atlanta favorite): Faithless Town.

Faithless Town sounds like if Roy Orbison, Ryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, and old Kings of Leon had a bastard child and nobody knows who the father is. The lead singer, Gene Owens, has a vintage quality to his voice that makes their songs sound like 1960s throwbacks dressed up in Wayfarers and skinny jeans. I’ve been listening to the preview of their new EP “When We Were Lions” and it takes me back to when Manchester Orchestra actually still lived in Atlanta. The EP drops on November 24th and Faithless Town will be playing a release show at the Earl. Even if you don’t buy the album, the show would be worth seeing. Tickets are cheap and depspite it being on a weekday...It's during Thanksgiving week! Even better reason to go to a show and get trashed. I mean, partake in musical festivities.

The official lineup for San Francisco’s third annual Outside Lands Festival caused some waves of bewilderment when it was first announced. Considering the lineups that had dominated Lollapalooza and Coachella this year, it was surprising that Outside Lands didn’t seem to step up to the same plate, while still remaining within the ballpark. Despite this, and the unusual inclusion of San Francisco regulars Furthur (featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead) as headliners opposite acts such as The Strokes and Kings Of Leon, a handful of excellent acts did make their way into the roster, attracting yet another slew of thousands of avid concertgoers to the first day of the festival.

Mark Hoppus has a new bullet point for his resume: talk show host.

The Blink-182 bassist-vocalist has teamed with music TV network Fuse for a new show called A Different Spin with Mark Hoppus, which is slated to premiere this September. The new hour-long variety-esque show -- featuring a co-host, which will be announced in the coming weeks -- will cover music news, interviews with musicians and celebrities, exclusive performances, tours, and more.

The Roots are back with their first new album since becoming America's favorite late-night house band -- and their full-time gig with Jimmy Fallon hasn't tamed the Philly boys one bit. Listen to How I Got Over, a day before its official June 22 release, over at MySpace right now.

The genre-blending hip-hop group recruited John Legend, Joanna Newsom, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk, and the ladies of Brooklyn's Dirty Projectors for their ninth studio album.

Radiohead fans rejoice -- the new album is coming.

In an interview with the BBC, guitarist Ed O'Brien said the Oxford quintet will finish recording their newest album in a "matter of weeks.... Ideally, it would be great if it came out sometime this year. It has got to; I hope so."

O'Brien went on to note that the group recorded it with a different approach than their 2007 SPIN-approved In Rainbows. "We decided at the end of the record never to do it like this again," O'Brien said. "That was kind of the end of Radiohead mark two."

It's been a busy year for Radiohead since starting production on the new album last May. The group released two songs this past fall -- "These Are My Twisted Words" and "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)", and played a January Haiti benefit in L.A.. And after making a live debut last fall, frontman Thom Yorke toured in 2010 with his own supergroup, Atoms for Peace.
