Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go.  MacGruber is the little Saturday Night Live parody skit that made it big. Probably the shortest skit in SNL history whose origins are in poking fun of the 1980’s show MacGyver. In that legendary TV series which ran from 1985 to 1992, actor Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate) played special agent Angus MacGyver who at the climax of each week’s episode would disarm bombs using everyday items such as gum wrappers, toothpicks, a used AA battery, or loose coins—anything handy that he could methodically intertwine and cleverly craft into tools to stop an explosion. The movie MacGruber which makes more fun of 80’s Action Films than of MacGyver specifically has Will Forte recreating his SNL mini-skit character who on late night TV never quite gets the job done; who instead of dismantling bombs oftentimes lets his personality differences with the show’s many guests or his own stupidity get in the way until time on the bomb’s clock has ticked away. That’s not the case in the big screen version. Instead, MacGruber manufactures his own explosives using the devices of gross humor, vulgarity, silliness, childishness and randomness to implode the genre in on itself rather than diffuse it of its many clichéd customs. Meaning everything you would imagine seeing in an 80’s action film is here adolescently blown up in your face. So much so that at times you might find yourself averting your gaze.
The Story: Wearing the same sleeveless vest and camping man’s look along with the quintessential mullet haircut that Anderson sported in the show’s 80s heyday (also worn by Mel Gibson’s Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon (1987)), MacGruber, like John Rambo in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) is called back into duty by his long-ago Colonel played by Powers Booth to dismantle the ultimate bomb, a Russian nuclear warhead stolen by MacGruber’s arch nemesis Dieter Von Cunth (played by Val Kilmer). Cunth, whose name is often pronounced in the film like a certain four letter C-word, is planning to detonate the bomb on U.S. soil. MacGruber attempts to assemble a team of muscle bound guys the likes of dudes you would see in Schwarzenegger films like Commando (1985), but runs into difficulties there and must assemble a second, smaller team comprised of Ryan Philippe and Kristen Wiig, reprising her SNL role as MacGruber sidekick Vicki St. Elmo. Together they journey to a multitude of locations, like so many of this year’s “team” films The Losers, A-Team, and The Expendables do, to find the WMD, “the bomb,” the warhead in this case and prevent it from detonating on U.S. soil.
The Goods: The film is photographed and edited like 80’s action films, bright and colorful, and unusually smoky in scenes, especially love scenes. Like Saturday Night Live often times the approach to parodying is a parody in itself. Over the top could be a way to describe it but while it borders at times on the humor of TV’s Police Squad (1982), or the Airplane (1980) comedy of Jim Abrahams and David Zucker it never quite goes over that edge. It just extends the edge further than you would ever expect. The photography, editing, visual effects and music score of the film supports that without being too much of a distraction. If anything, the music interferes at time to punch up some of the jokes particularly, again, in action sequences and love scenes. The irony being that you hear music often associated with these types of moments but the music then changes abruptly to the reality of MacGruber’s true, man-childish tastes, and therein lies one of many jokes in the film.
Where most SNL movies like Wayne’s World (1992), Coneheads (1993), or The Blues Brothers (1980) have three or four jokes in a scene, MacGruber has up to ten sometimes fifteen or more jokes in a scene, or so it seems. And when the scene is done the jokes keep lingering sometimes becoming random scenes in themselves that do nothing more for the plot of the story than to just keep you laughing, or slack-jawed in amazement that they would even put some of this stuff on screen. I like that the film takes risks in this way, that scenes overflow seemingly organic into odd new territories still within the context of the film. Screenwriting gurus always want you to follow the script format by the letters but MacGruber goes to the limit on scene development without ruining the integrity of the bare story essentials viewers need to be aware of. The writers, SNL writers John Solomon, Jorma Taccone, and Will Forte know exactly where they’re going as far as the most climactic moment in the film. Knowing that gives them the freedom to do whatever the heck they wish to do leading up to that scene so long as the bread crumbs are present to lead us there.
If you’ve been watching Forte and Jason Sudeikis on SNL, they’ve been doing some unusually serious skits, some of which play out more like Playhouse 90 TV from the 1950s, or like something Rod Serling wrote before his Twilight Zone days. That’s to say a deadpan weightiness to drama applied to live TV but in their case with a humorous subject matter. Such as in the SNL skit where Sudeikis plays an interviewee for a NASA job against Forte’s interviewer. In the scene, Forte steps out for a second at which time Sudeikis eats one of Forte’s potato chips. Upon his return he counts the chips and the two go back and forth pointing fingers for a ridiculously long time before Sudeikis confesses and literally spits up the chip. I found the skit unbelievably compelling; for the most part due to the straight-faced performances of Forte and Sudeikis with what would normally be the usual SNL comedic material. Never in the history of SNL have I ever seen anything like it. In my opinion, it remains a truly groundbreaking skit for the show, and for the comedians whom I now refer to as actors.
While one could say many of the actors’ individual performances on SNL bleed into one another from Saturday to Saturday—Wiig’s characters for instance are oftentimes annoyingly similar to ones she’s done before—Fortes rarely repeats characterizations. Unlike many of his SNL counterparts, he clearly strives to make each character he does unique, even at the risk of busting a blood vessel. He’ll usually allow his emotions and blood pressure to go to the extreme, red faced and nearly screaming at times while other occasions he’ll barely say a word; or like with his ESPN sports commentator Greg Stink who smiles the whole time with his pageboy haircut while making the most unrelated dim-witted comments you’ve ever heard a sports commentator make.
The Flaws: But having too much faux spontaneity or overabundance of gags can be a flaw too to some viewers who are used to going into a theater with preconceived expectations of how a film will play out, especially within the genre’s format. Here, the traits of action films are obviously in play but they are also at risk of losing their most innate properties with viewers as the film progresses. Simply because Forte and the writers explore random jokes rather than staying strapped to the paths of the plot. Some scenes go on infinitely longer than they normally should because you get the sense there’s a joke or two more that can possibly be milked. And Director Jorma Taccone (Chaka in Land of the Lost (2009)) is not afraid to explore them. That special feature enjoyed by some will be a detriment to others. You can’t please everyone, sure. But when you spend big money to draw folks into the theater, to spend hard earned dollars these days, you better be careful not to piss them off.
The repetitiveness nature of the skit on SNL, usually one to three very short scenes about three minutes each in length played out during the course of an entire Saturday Night Live taping, occurs in the film as well. Even when it’s not related to bomb disarmament, as if the film itself were one long Saturday Night Live recording with skits in between skits. Not necessarily a flaw, more like a mechanism for setting up jokes that for the most part I think people will comprehend as part of MacGruber’s very distinctive and multifaceted personality traits but it again runs the risk of turning people away.
Regardless, without the FCC restrictions of Television, even the more flexible late night programming, this R rated MacGruber has no boundaries. So beware, and remember it’s parody.
The Call: Spend the ten if you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live and gross jokes. Otherwise stow the dough and try to catch it on DVD or cable. Know also that the TV version will have so many edits and so much of the language replaced that it won’t be what the filmmakers intended. And if you do go, go when it’s crowded. You’ll have a better time.
Rated R for strong crude and sexual content, violence, language and some nudity. Running time is 99 minutes. Produced by Lorne Michaels who has his name prominently shown at the head of all SNL movie projects except this one with an omittance of said credit. Special thanks is given near the end to “Every 80s Action Film we loved.” Credit is also given to “The Boner Ghost.” What? Exactly. Soundtrack features 80s hits by such artists as Mr. Mister, Quarterflash, and Michael Bolton, among others. Also stars SNL alum Maya Rudolph.
