Let’s go to the movies! I love the movie experience, study what happens on the screen and am writing about it to help you with your movie going decisions. Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go. I’ve been blogging about movies on 99x.com since April 2008 and have been listening to 99x since moving to Atlanta in 1996. I’ve worked on the Olympics and short films that have appeared at Sundance and other film festivals in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I have a Master’s degree in film from Florida State University and regard film school as one of the best experiences of my life.

Not surprisingly, Alice in Wonderland is a visual feast. Especially in 3D. Fans of Jeff Spicoli falling out of their smoke-filled Volkswagen Buses in the back of movie house parking lots will especially be turned on by the psychedelic set design, costumes and visual effects that are simply scrumptious. It all looks like candy in a way and I kept expecting to hear The Beatles’ Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds play over the images. Director Tim Burton unleashes his unique fantasy-macabre vision once again in a perfect surreal setting seemingly destined to have been born a Burton project. My question is, within this experimental magic of Wonderland can Disney capture the kind of large audience complacency they normally find with their animated fairytales?
Something about the staleness of the story and a certain stiffness in Johnny Depp leads me to believe Disney may have made Burton go a more serious, Lord of the Rings route where saving a kingdom from a head offing Queen and her ferocious pet dragon seemed the more commercial thing to do rather than making Alice’s journey humorously, curiously compelling. Unique nonetheless, at least Disney allowed Burton to make the movie in his style, which is a blessing here. Without the imagination and a certain irony a gifted director could bestow upon this famous fable, it could most certainly have been a disaster. But I see this film being a cult classic. Maybe not at the end of opening weekend, but with each passing year it will become more favored by those young adults and teens who refuse to be hogtied by what are often times Hollywood’s reflection of society’s norms.
Curious it is in terms of trying to understand what the characters are saying. It’s like a British film, a Shakespearian play, a film with subtitles sort of in the sense it takes a good while, at least twenty minutes to get into the language of the film. Even then it might still be a tad difficult to understand exactly what they’re saying to one another unless you speak limerick. If you don’t know the Lewis Carroll story, the name Lewis Carroll being a pseudonym for author Charles Ludwidge Dodgson, Alice’s journey to Wonderland is from Carroll’s books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). It stays semi-faithful to Disney’s original animated feature from 1951, an amalgamated version of the Wonderland world, also called the Underworld, where two sisters, one good, the White Queen played by Anne Hathaway, one evil, the Red Queen played by Helena Bonham Carter, divide Wonderland between freedom and tyranny. Alice’s arrival is a foretelling come true, that she, like Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings, or Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars is the chosen one who will bring freedom to the Underworld, balance to the force, the chocolate to the peanut butter, ice cream to the pie, snacks to the munchies, etc. She being all of about fourteen years old. At least she looks fourteen. And not a single creature, especially the animals, are free to do what they wish under the grasp and peculiar denial of the evil Red Queen. Yes, the poor animals, monkeys and piglets forced to hold up furniture in place of furniture legs, and croquet played using flamingos for mallets and hedgehogs for balls.
Alice drinks potions and eats brownie-shaped cakes both filled and stuffed with magic ingredients that will make her grow to the size of the oldest tree in Underworld or shrink her to the size of a field mouse, smaller, or taller, if she wished. She is befriended by a Mad Hatter simply played by Johnny Depp who with orange Bozo hair and cool Jimmy Hendrix clothing, and a very special hat like the one Slash wears, only better, suggests through certain eccentricity in fashion that one would expect his outward appearance to match his personality. But it does not. Instead, the Hatter plays some sort of rhyming Obi Wan Kenobi who is sort of care-taker of the good side of Wonderland, sometimes deep voiced when mad, thus the name Mad Hatter, sometimes Jack Sparrow from Pirates. But what he needs is a bit more Benny and June (1990). With Disney it all stays in the family. I can see a new ride being built right now for the Disney theme parks where the tea cup ride is only the first step to something more trippy and dark like a Haunted House on anti-depressants.
It took me a while to warm up to Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (notice how I use the director’s name in the title?), to say the least, but I like it. I like it for its oddity like I like most of Burton’s work. You can see elements of Beetle Juice (1988), Sleepy Hollow (1999), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993); I’m a fan of the look of Sleepy Hollow, particularly the cinematography, and cinematography here by Pirates of the Caribbean director of photography Dariusz Wolskie who also shot Dark City (1998) and Eagle Eye (2008) does a brilliant job of keeping Wonderland colorful and soft while also dark and moody. What Alice in Wonderland needs though from the sleeves of Burton is more of the comedic exploits from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (1985). It’s Alice’s big adventure but somewhere along the way it morphs into the Mad Hatter’s movie. And unfortunately there isn’t enough of Mad Hatter’s personal story here to latch onto and care anything about. We’re made to want to care only because of certain adult responsibilities in the Underworld that have been thrown upon Alice the child, mirroring, “through the looking glass,” the pressures of Alice’s Victorian life in the real world. Because we become so vested in the Mad Hatter’s circumstances, it would be more entertaining and enjoyable to have him be a bit more upbeat and physically dexterous rather than stoic and statuesque all the time. Audiences could probably sympathize more if they felt the Red Queen’s oppression of the Hatter sequestered a certain uncatchable energy in him, but instead it’s like holding prisoner an immovable rock rather than lightening in a bottle.
The beginning of the film, the ending, they bookend the Wonderland part nicely, reminding me of Burton’s wonderful Big Fish (2003). Thus giving the Wonderland adventure deeper meaning to Alice, a metaphor of her life she and the audience fully understand when all is said and done. So I say, for the experience of seeing something enchanting and magical, different to say the least, at the theater, on a large screen, in 3D, Alice in Wonderland is certainly an experience. You could save your money and see it on DVD or Blu-ray but I don’t believe any home theater system is going to provide this kind of visual exhibition. It’s no Avatar, but it’s no sell-out for Burton either.
Rated PG, “for fantasy action/violence involving scary images and situations, and for a smoking caterpillar (the official Motion Picture Association of America’s remarks).” The smoking Blue Caterpillar by the way is voiced by Alan Rickman. Blue Caterpillar, Stephen Fry’s Cheshire Cat, and a rare appearance by Crispin Glover, in my opinion, along with the cinematography, BIG HEAD visual effects, and Danny Elfman’s score, are the best things about Alice in Wonderland.
