About Jon

Let’s go to the movies! I love the movie experience, study what happens on the screen and am writing about it to help you with your movie going decisions. Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go. I’ve been blogging about movies on 99x.com since April 2008 and have been listening to 99x since moving to Atlanta in 1996. I’ve worked on the Olympics and short films that have appeared at Sundance and other film festivals in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I have a Master’s degree in film from Florida State University and regard film school as one of the best experiences of my life.
I currently live in Atlanta with my wife and two labs; love baseball, music, family and friends, good food, and of course movies. Just to blog down thoughts from an eyewitness perspective I avoid reading other movie blogs or reviews on a new release until I’ve posted my own. All references to box office results or cast and crew are culled from boxofficeguru.com, boxofficemojo.com, or IMDB.com. Wikipedia is not used in the writing of this blog. Follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/jonlamoreaux for additional movie updates.

I can’t say Avatar belongs in the top nine movies of 2009, nor the top nine of the decade. But as far as movie events go, yeah, I put it somewhere in the top nine movie experiences of the decade. And the reason for that is threefold: 1) director James Cameron has every technological advancement in cinema at his disposal and he uses all of them, for good or bad, to make Avatar quite the movie outing; 2) as we near the end of the Blackberry-Twitter-Facebook-Wii-Playstation-Xbox-iPhone decade, what better way to go out than with a film about the marriage of virtual and real worlds; and 3) while its 3D is not pioneering, and might remind some of Disney Epcot Center’s 3D Captain EO (1986), Cameron does leave the first decade of the millennium with a decent premonition of what going to the movies can be in the next decade and beyond. It won’t matter how good your set-up is at home, this is the way big action films should be seen.
The story is simple. Paraplegic Marine Jake Sully played by Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation (2009)) finds himself filling in for his recently deceased twin brother Tommy who was the lead on a science project that involved virtual assignment of human brain activity into the body of avatars, clones of human-cat-like creatures called Na’vi who are the indigenous people of the planet Pandora. Jake is coached by Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) who is skeptical of his potential at first but is helped by her team of scientists in showing Jake how to use the avatar body. Also using Jake is Colonel Miles Quaritch, played exceptionally well by Tombstone (1993) and Public Enemies’ (2009) Stephen Lang, who convinces Jake to infiltrate the Na’vi village as one of the natives and persuade the tribe to relocate. Turns out the corporate-like organization known as RDA, Resources Development Administration, wants to mine the Na’vi land for a rare mineral called unobtainium, a superconductive crystal more valuable than diamonds, gold, or oil, used for space travel and all things related to manufactured energy. While in the company of the Na’vi Jake falls for one of the natives, Neytiri played by Zoe Saldana (Uhura in Star Trek (2009)) but he also falls in love with his avatar legs and with a lush planet “at one with nature” like no environment he, or us, have ever seen (except maybe underwater in Cameron’s The Abyss (1989)). Jake goes through all the tests a young Na’vi must endure on the path to maturity including the taming of eagle-like dragons called Banshees (quite frankly the best part of the Na’vi world in my opinion). And after all of this, finally, a ceremony as Jake becomes a Na’vi man, a fulfillment recognized with an interlocking, laying-on of hands by all members of the tribe. African and Native American themed music swells on cue then and you can’t help but be moved. Even though it’s a cartoon. Wait, did I just say that?
I know, at this stage it all sounds so make believe, so storybook fantasy which is exactly the way it feels on screen. It is not the film I was led to believe it would be and had I known how it would look and how pre-teen it all seemed, how almost fully animated it is, I might have avoided it on any given Sunday, going for a remake of Goodfellas (1990) instead. I didn’t sign up for The Lion King (1994). I signed up for Terminator (1984) and Aliens (1986), and True Lies (1994), Cameron’s other successful films behind the highest grossing film of all time, Titanic (1997).
The two worlds, the two films – the Na’vi world, which is wholly animated, and the human world which is live action—are in conflict with one another, in the film story obviously but more literally for the audience. I really wished it was all live action and preferred that at first until I was mesmerized by the colorful digital artwork, like a cross between the space artwork of Chesley Bonestell and the digital fantasy screensaver and wallpaper paintings of David B. Mattingly and Joe Bergeron; stuff you see at shopping mall kiosks that make your eyes hurt. Any single shot from the world of Pandora could be used as computer wallpaper and could easily be found on pop-ups selling emoticons or movie rentals. It could be too that Cameron gets more millage from the 3D when everything can be computer generated, like maybe it’s easier today to create better 3D with animation than with live action, thus all of the 3D animated films like Up and A Christmas Carol. Seems pointless though since the 3D within Avatar’s running time depreciates faster than a new car. Going into it though I hoped that the computer generated animation would be hidden from us like it was successfully done in the films Star Trek and District 9 released earlier this year, not like in prequel Star Wars films where Yoda and Jar Jar Binks appear to be totally animated. It’s confusing at times because one minute you’re watching a Disney-like animated film, and it feels like Disney with its moral and ethical implications, and like so many Disney animated films for the characters there is a sense of loss that binds them together and forces them to grow. I felt like it would have been fine entirely animated, and had they billed it as such I might have then enjoyed it more; it might have even been okay as a live action film too with visual effects and animatronics and puppetry like we’ve seen in so many other great science fiction films. I might even say George Lucas gets the live action animation mix a tad better than Avatar though his last films aren’t nearly as good as his first 1977 version or The Empire Strikes Back, Jim Henson puppets and all. But I digress. The two designs are at odds with one another and regardless of Cameron’s intentions I feel it hurts the overall sense of escape the film deserves.
After enough romping around in the comic strip forest of Pandora I was ready to go back to the real world to see what was cooking, to maybe find some conflict brewing back at the command center. And maybe Jake felt this too though the use of legs far outweighed anything in reality.. It goes on like this, back and forth in the film until you’re forced to see the animated world as exactly what it is, kid stuff. Which is fine if you’re a kid. And well, then the Adults have their world too though you can’t say we get enough of it in all of its eye-popping digitalness. We don’t get to choose what we see. It’s either very cool weaponry and gunships or it’s very cool flowers, plants and trees. One that destroys and one that gives life.
Avatar is unfortunately very redundant and familiar, way too similar to Dances With Wolves (1990) for my liking even if both films reflect universally a historical struggle of indigenous cultures everywhere. The military stylings too are reminiscent of Aliens but without the aliens. Giovanni Ribisi plays the equivalent of Paul Reiser’s character from Aliens, the corporate low-life sent to obtain the unobtainable unobtanium—and I’ll stop right here to say how disappointed I am that the script called for a mineral to be named this. It’s one of the reasons the film fails for me, it’s the name of an object you might find important in a child’s book, or in a PBS show for grade-schoolers. Sure, we can all see the parallel to humanity’s penchant for material objects and fuel. With wars fought over oil, or wars perceived to be created for shear imperialism there might be commentary here, at decade’s end, but so obvious nonetheless. And there’s also Weaver whose presence on screen whisks us back to the entire Alien franchise. But is all of this meant to be familiar? There’s something semi-poetic in a film about virtual reality and avatars that seems to demand a false sense of reality that familiarity provides. If that’s the intention then Cameron should have poured it on because I think that’s just brilliant. Could he also be saying something about how infused we are with our virtual worlds? Preferring one world over another or potentially becoming confused on which environment we would rather be in? On Facebook all day, losing sleep while obsessively playing Call to Duty or Guitar Hero all of the time, or in the physical world producing reports and on conference calls? Like the character Jake who finds the Na’vi world so much more alive and colorful compared to his drab science fiction, legless world. Who wouldn’t want to stay in the Na’vi world?
Like I mentioned earlier, the 3D in the film loses its magic after about fifteen minutes or so not necessarily because it’s overwhelming but because you just get used to it. Like getting used to subtitles. Nearly two hours in there’s some snow-like activity that reminds you you’re watching 3D. An effective tool to wake the audience. Don’t get me wrong, 3D is the way to see this movie. If you’re planning to spend the dough on Avatar go ahead and spend a few extra dollars to see it in 3D. Don’t even bother with the two dimensional version. I say this with all seriousness because without that extra dimension Avatar is pretty mediocre. It must be approached as an event, a spectacle to be witnessed rather than savored. Some may enjoy it, some may not and there is plenty to be amused by such as the luminescent Abyss-like colorings of flora and fauna Pandora has to offer. Stunning animation of whizzing and dancing bugs and mammals, and the dandelion jelly-fish, moss-like creatures that carry the planet’s energy in the form of a spiritual vibe known as Eywa. Yeah, don’t cheat yourself out of having 3D even if the digital on a digital screen for the digital 3D washes out the film, drowns out the contrast. That and the cinematographer having to light the live action for green screen give the human world a flat, low contrast appearance. It almost seems like Cameron really makes a push to want you desiring the animated portion of the film, but I didn’t want it. I wanted something more close to home, something that I could psychologically transport myself into, synthesize and sympathize with like all the other character driven films out there that often want the audience member to be one with the character, to escape reality for the fantasy life of a James Bond, or a Batman, or a Bridget Jones. I wanted to do exactly what Jake gets to do which is plug and play but it’s difficult to do without a flesh representative.
Avatar is not one of Cameron’s best films but thought provoking nonetheless. Story structure and storytelling are solid, meaning the plot is fine and techniques like cutting to action, use of close-ups, fade-outs, camera movement to heighten emotion are all done here with perfection. There are no doubts Cameron knows how to craft a film. But the length of the film is way too long (like my write-up here), especially for an “animated” film. I hate to say it but it feels like it needs to be a mini-series on the SyFy Channel. Script-wise, there’s no exposition to say if Earthlings, or Americans as they walk and talk like, have sent the military to Pandora for American or World exploration. There’s no U.N.., no other accents to suggest it’s a multi-national military. In some ways it feels artificial, almost like the military in Starship Troopers. A bit too contrived and too homogenous, as homogenous as the Na’vi. Right from wrong, in blue and white, animated and real. A little too formal and no in-between.
All of this, again, could be Cameron’s further commentary on the decade’s events. Where will game playing, social media and virtual worlds take us? Call it Pandora’s or ours, either way James Cameron has opened rather than closed an impressively eventful box.
Rated PG-13. Running time two hours and forty-two minutes. In digital 3D and IMAX. Nominated for four Golden Globes.

One Sunday womens timberland boots morning, I was told that someone was waiting for me in timberland 6 boots office. When I saw her mens timberland boots I was shocked, since I immediately recognized her from church but had no timberland boots outlet idea that it was she who wrote the notes. She was sitting in a chair in timberland roll top boots office with her hands folded in her lap. Her head was bowed and when she raised white timberland boots it to look at me, she could barely smile without pain. Her face was disfigured, and timberland classic boat skin so tight from surgical procedures that smiling or laughing was very difficult for her timberland kids waterproof boots . She had suffered terribly from treatment to remove the growths timberland shoes that had so marred her face. We chatted for a while that Sunday morning and agreed to meet for timberland womens premium boots lunch later that week.
