Let’s go to the movies! I love the movie experience, study what happens on the screen and am writing about it to help you with your movie going decisions. Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go. I’ve been blogging about movies on 99x.com since April 2008 and have been listening to 99x since moving to Atlanta in 1996. I’ve worked on the Olympics and short films that have appeared at Sundance and other film festivals in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I have a Master’s degree in film from Florida State University and regard film school as one of the best experiences of my life.
I currently live in Atlanta with my wife and two labs; love baseball, music, family and friends, good food, and of course movies. Just to blog down thoughts from an eyewitness perspective I avoid reading other movie blogs or reviews on a new release until I’ve posted my own.  If you like your sci-fi in your horror and your horror in your sci-fi, Pandorum is your film. Psychological thriller? Alien film? I can’t tell you. All I can say is there has been relatively little advertising of this film through regular channels. So if you’re looking for a film that’s one of the best of the summer run-off, or I guess part of an early, early fall kick-off, and sneaking up on us under the radar, this ship-stuck-in space film with lots of darkness and evil lurking around every corner is just for you. Before you spend $10 on the highly publicized and glossy Hollywood big-pic Surrogates, think about this film first. You won’t be disappointed.
Pandorum has a taut script and fast action with just enough dialog to keep you informed while also keeping you guessing. Could be a Twilight Zone episode expanded to feature film. Feels a little like the Dustin Hoffman, Sam Jackson film Sphere (1998) and something about it reminded me of the Sam Neill, Lawrence Fishburn film Event Horizon (1997), among other horror films I won’t mention for fear of raising your expectations or saying too much about Pandorum. Just know it stars Ben Foster the superb young actor who played Jake Mazursky in Alfa Dog (2006), here playing a whisper-to-a-boil voiced ship crewmember by the name of Bower. He and Dennis Quaid wake up from a deep hyperspace sleep with amnesia, an effect brought on by extended hypersleep. They sort of piece together who and where they are and team up to find a solution to conflicts both within and outside their beings.
I’ll get back to some of the better points of the production value in Part II. If the folks at Overture Films have purposely held back on marketing planning for some kind of word of mouth campaign, my hat is off to them. If that’s the tactic, it’s a great idea because things seemed pretty stale at the box office this summer and all those explosive trailers left me feeling a bit ripped off.
