Let’s go to the movies! I love the movie experience, study what happens on the screen and am writing about it to help you with your movie going decisions. Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go. I’ve been blogging about movies on 99x.com since April 2008 and have been listening to 99x since moving to Atlanta in 1996. I’ve worked on the Olympics and short films that have appeared at Sundance and other film festivals in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I have a Master’s degree in film from Florida State University and regard film school as one of the best experiences of my life.
I currently live in Atlanta with my wife and two labs; love baseball, music, family and friends, good food, and of course movies. Just to blog down thoughts from an eyewitness perspective I avoid reading other movie blogs or reviews on a new release until I’ve posted my own.  One of the best of the summer line-up thus far. I’d say better than Star Trek. And you don’t have to know who these guys are in the G.I. Joe scheme of things. It’s all laid out for you here, in very simple terms with deceptively savvy direction and writing to kind of string you along. But of course if you’re a fan of the 12” figures from the 60s, or the animated series from the 80s I think you’ll be surprisingly satisfied. Of course nothing is as good as your twelve-year-old imagination might have made the Joe adventures out to be.
Certainly, the film is a heck of a lot better than I thought it would be. I just had low expectations based on the trailers, the cast, the mass-marketing of it all. It gets old. But the cast works great considering the summer release, what that means in terms of expectations—a ton of explosives and some pretty cool effects, especially since it’s helmed by director Stephen Sommers of The Mummy fame. For big-budget, high-gloss, big soundtrack films it’s competitive.
Better than the usual fair because of two things, two people really: director Stephen Sommers and writer Stuart Beattie. The script by Beattie, screenwriter of Collateral, Derailed, and the Pirates of the Caribbean films, goes beyond simple. It’s all atomic sub-core straightforwardness at the bones—get to the bomb before the bad guys and save the world. But it’s the showing, not telling, of the relationship between the characters, in strategically placed, short rounds of flashbacks that we find depth and cause-effect that moves us. The other writers, David Elliot and Paul Lovett, they did that 2005 film with Andre Benjamin, Tyrese Gibson and Mark Walberg called Four Brothers that wasn’t all that bad which, again, you can see elements of here.
G.I. Joe has the “kung fu grip and life-like hair and beard,” as the vintage ads from the 60’s would say, and they use it as a joke in a scene or two. Hasbro was involved in the making of this film so they have a vested interest in anything that moves and could be sold in toy versions.
You can count the flashbacks. They’re pretty proportionate between characters. Limited to just a few characters which is perfect. Too many Joes, all having flashbacks, would have caused chaos and been a logistical nightmare for the audience. The flashbacks we get though add dimension to one central character, Duke played by Channing Tatum, and to an interesting degree a few peripheral characters, most notably Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes. Because of this I think we get slightly more complexity to the film than The Mummy series but like those films too it never gets complicated. It’s just enough to keep it smart, keep it moving, and keep you in your seat.
Running time was drop dead balls accurate; a cool one hour and eighteen minutes for a summer movie event, which means it’s under two hours folks! Which it should be. Could have even shaved another ten minutes off.
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marlon Wayons, Sienna Miller, Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid and a host of other great actors some of which were featured in The Mummy films. I say too that one of the bad guys is purposefully made to look and sound like a major Hollywood star though you can’t make out who due to a mask over his mouth. It’s a brilliant disguise devised by Sommers I believe to kind of intentionally keep the audience distracted. G.I. Joe also has a look about it that reminds me of the Hell Boy series. That’s a good thing.
