Let’s go to the movies! I love the movie experience, study what happens on the screen and am writing about it to help you with your movie going decisions. Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go. I’ve been blogging about movies on 99x.com since April 2008 and have been listening to 99x since moving to Atlanta in 1996. I’ve worked on the Olympics and short films that have appeared at Sundance and other film festivals in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I have a Master’s degree in film from Florida State University and regard film school as one of the best experiences of my life.

 The old Land of the Lost TV show that ran on TV from 1974 to 1976 liked to think it was eons ahead of its time, and it probably was in the mid 70’s. Not as far advanced for TV as Star Trek was in 1965. But the chroma key fake video background set they used on Land of the Lost worked well for the show. It was the claymation dinosaurs that really sucked.
But if you were ten-years-old in the 70’s you didn’t care. Alien lizard men called Sleestak, shhhleeshing their way around caves beneath the Lost City were enough to make you wonder what lurks in the dark. Because it was the spark of these things that set the imagination off. I wonder today if there’s any spark at all, if in trying to create that perfect reproduction of life in HD and digital video if we aren’t losing some cerebral spark.
In movie theaters now, Land of the Lost hits the big screen, starring Will Farrell and Danny McBride, shot in a similar fashion as the old show but on an updated, gloriously all green-screen sound stage like George Lucas used for the last three Star Wars films, and like what most comic book-like action films use today. The concept is the same—shoot the actors in action against supposed creatures and then add the scenery and dinosaurs in later with computer animation. Only it’s so deceptively life-like it’s almost surreal. It’s very polished, smoothly done and shouldn’t be forgotten when it comes time to look back on the year’s best technical achievements.
Land of the Lost wastes no time in getting to the action. Within seconds we see our first glimpse of the “lost” world, a quick tease of chaotic time sensory using a well defined human subject from NASA’s present who finds himself lost in another dimension and era. And within fifteen minutes or so we’re plunging our way a thousand feet below to the land of the lost with Rick, Will, and Holly only in this version they’re not related. They slip through a time warp while testing out Rick’s tachyon amplifier machine, a sort of Ghost Busters back-pack meets Doc Brown’s flux capacitor engine that uses tachyon crystal energy to travel through time (while also playing Chorus Line show tunes). Once transported to another land, they find this world filled with anachronistic artifacts indifferent to the place they should be; a World War II era record player playing Glenn Miller, Cadillacs from the fifties crushed in sand at a desert drive-in, a Humvee limousine, an ice-cream truck, a motel swimming pool full of water. ..multi-generational Americana stuff in the desert, surrounded by dinosaurs and alien lizard men!
One of these lizard guys is Enik, a smaller version of the Sleestak who wears a tunic. He appears to have a connection with Dr. Marshall and reports that another Sleestak by the name of Zarn threatens to control the universe if he can get Marshall’s tachyon amplifier. The search is on for the device, not only to save the universe but to travel back home. Along the way, with the help of a Pakuni tribesman named Cha-Ka, the gang encounters obstacles and plot twists that provide for a very tight ride.
So tight in fact, and well edited that there is no time to get bored, no down time to think about pending Facebook status updates. And this could be a slight disadvantage to the story because at no time do they really go kooky-crazy over the fact they’re being chased by a T-Rex. There’s no “talk about scars” scene like in Jaws before the action gets heavy and we have a climactic conclusion. Without that kind of expositional dip in the film I think it loses a rating or two.
Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of the original TV show and can remember all of the episodes you’re in for a huge surprise because this film is full of surprises. It’s all here—reference to the episode with the hot-air balloon, Holly in braided pig-tails, pylons, crystals, the episode where Holly throws rocks at Dopey to (lovingly) get him to leave her, the awesome Deliverance inspired theme song—it’s all here, but those surprises of course are the fact that the writer and director of Land of the Lost know fans of the show will have certain expectations, and these filmmakers turn all of that on a dime. They know you’re expecting characters to do certain things, for creatures to behave a certain way, just like the show, so when they do something totally unexpected you’ll be surprised. In a good way. In a funny way. The film is very ironical, contextually if you know your Land of the Lost. So be prepared to be entertained either way. That says a lot actually, because they didn’t just remake it to make a fast buck. And at the same time, they didn’t just hack away at it.
If you’ve never seen the original Sid and Marty Krofft production (the brothers who produced a lot of kid programming in the 70s, including H.R. Pufnstuf, and who produced this film) from 1974 you’ll find this film remotely similar to films like 2001’s Planet of the Apes, or 1993’s Jurassic Park. With a Will Farrell tone to it. It’s all Will Farrell, with his leather zip-up Florsheim boots. I love the dude, but I wanted McBride to have more control of a few scenes. He does get his moments, which is fine. They’re both hilarious. Chorizo Tacos.
Apparently some of the old shows were written by Star Trek TV writers. I know after watching the entire series in a marathon on the Sci-Fi channel that there is a lot of reference to things being “illogical.” Coincidentally, Leonard Nimoy makes a voice cameo in this film as the voice of The Zarn.
Rated PG-13 with a running time of a cool 93 minutes. Great movie to see at the drive-in.
Also, this opens the door now for a potential boon of Sid and Marty Krofft TV products for the big screen. Look for H.R. Pufnstuf real soon.
