Let’s go to the movies! I love the movie experience, study what happens on the screen and am writing about it to help you with your movie going decisions. Hopefully something in the blogging of a film’s big elements – screenwriting, cinematography, directing, acting, visual effects, sound, and editing (and sometimes automobiles) – will help movie fans discern where their entertainment dollars should go. I’ve been blogging about movies on 99x.com since April 2008 and have been listening to 99x since moving to Atlanta in 1996. I’ve worked on the Olympics and short films that have appeared at Sundance and other film festivals in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I have a Master’s degree in film from Florida State University and regard film school as one of the best experiences of my life.
I currently live in Atlanta with my wife and two labs; love baseball, music, family and friends, good food, and of course movies. Just to blog down thoughts from an eyewitness perspective I avoid reading other movie blogs or reviews on a new release until I’ve posted my own.  I can’t say much about Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian other than Amelia Earhart is much cuter in this film than history’s photos seem to suggest. Ouch, that’s harsh. What does that say about how Hollywood re-writes history? That Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to do a solo flight across the Atlantic in a single engine plane should be made to appear softer, curvier, more feminine than she really was to make her more interesting to a mass audience? Less of a tomboy? Well, maybe that’s the point. Over time, when you come to understand who Earhart was maybe there’s something there that suggests she wasn’t very feminine when in fact she was every bit as much a woman as your mother. So if you think of your mother flying over the Atlantic in that match-box of a plane you might think differently of what her accomplishments meant to (wo)mankind.
But enough from the soapbox.
Actually, Night at the Museum I and II do an excellent job educating kids and adults about great mammals and reptiles of our Earth’s history. From dinosaurs to dudes like Attila the Hun, from American cowboys to Roman soldiers to explorers like Earhart and Sacajawea to sculptures by Rodan or of Presidents like Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Even if they are stereotypes. If viewers seeing either of the Museum films have never heard of one, or some of these figures then films like these might tend to open up some minds, maybe inspire a trip to their city’s museums and libraries. That is the best part of both of these films. The educational part. The first film being largely better at it.
In Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley is no longer frightened by or confused by the museum habitants come-to-life. That was the crux of the whole thing. His ability to come to terms with this sort of reality and overcome the obstacles he faced as a night guard at this museum-come-to-life. So the writers of both of these films, Robert Ben Garant and actor/writer Thomas Lennon, writers of Taxi (2004), The Pacifier (2005), Herbie Fully Loaded (2005), Balls of Fury (2007), among others, create a world takeover plot inside one of the Smithsonian buildings and then have Larry and Amelia Earhart seek help for a rescue. That and Owen Wilson’s tiny cowboy character, Jedediah Smith, finds himself caught in the sands of an hour glass, put there by this film’s antagonist, fictional Egyptian Pharaoh Kahmunrah played by Hank Azarian. Kah’s brother was a good guy in the first film, back again briefly in this film for which his family’s golden tablet, the one that powers the inhabitants of the museum to life, is about to be used here by the bad brother Kah as a key to control the Universe. Larry has until the hourglass fills to find the code to unlock it. Will Jedediah Smith bite it? Not if his friends can help it.
Night at the Museum II is fine for kids, but adults won’t have the innocent kid-like fun they had watching the first film. In fact, outside of some cool Smithsonian moving pictures from the National Gallery and crafts from the Air and Space museum, and Amelia Earhart come to life through Amy Adams, audience members fifteen and over will be bored stiff.
Rated PG. 105 minutes but feels like two hours.
