About Jeremy

An original Georgia native growing up as a delinquent in the one traffic light town called Dacula in the 1980s, music on the radio and the most peculiar videos on cable television networks were my pass key to validating that there was much more to life than football, homecoming queens and the quest to reaching the top of a shallow popularity meter.

Before MTV, only a handful of artists were fashion-conscious and took advantage of imagery to sell their records (KISS, David Bowie, Blondie). On August 1, 1981 – the year MTV launched in America, video indeed killed the radio star, but it boosted the careers of innovative artists like the Jam, Ultravox and Generation X that defined the decade with their new wave imagery despite the fact that the FM airways had previously denied them access. It was evident that what was shown on cable television now radio’s greatest influence as kids like me spent allowances and small wages on records and cassettes after catching a visually stunning music video on MTV’s 120 Minutes over the weekend. After building a nice collection of alternative ‘80s music in various formats (vinyl, VHS, Laserdisc, cassette, CD), I subscribed to the new wave magazine Star Hits (short-lived American version of Britain’s Smash Hits), started attending concerts at the innocent age of fourteen, and could regularly be seen at the Masquerade’s Old Wave Thursdays with Miss Mary as the ‘90s progressed. In 1992, market giant Power 99 made a shocking transition from Top 40 pop to alternative radio. For the first time in Atlanta history, the chains that bound post modern ‘80s music to college stations left of the dial were broken with the inaugural debut of Steve Craig’s Retroplex on 99x, an hour of ‘80s & ‘90s post modern / new wave music including punk classics, b-sides, live tracks, and in-studio interviews. The Retroplex became the Energizer battery of radio programs for Atlanta’s premier alternative station for fifteen years until 99x was restructured and Craig relocated to New York in 2008.

Currently, with Atlanta radio becoming more predictable each month, finding classic alternative music on the dial is quite a challenge. It has almost become circularly underground once again. As a blogger on 99x, I would like to shed a little light on the new wave ‘80s for today’s alternative nation. My objective is to provide you, the reader, with detailed insight on classic ‘80s artists like B-Movie, the Thompson Twins and ABC, plus updates on where they are today. Many artists have resurrected in the studio and back on the touring circuit, albeit less than their original forms, playing large scale venues and making contemporary yet signature-sounding albums that please both their aging audiences as well as Generation Y. New albums, flashback concerts and all-access interviews will be shared and posted as I settle into my space here on 99x. Is it all ‘80s, all the time? It would be of great disservice not to introduce you to bands like The Mary Onettes, Foxglove Hunt and Germany’s Rename. Whereas most pioneering synth-pop and post-modern bands called England their home, an entire crop of American and Swedish electro, post-modernists are making their own waves across the U.S., Europe and Germany without the support of large, corporate record labels. However, rest assured; they will be given my support. Look out for cd releases as well as concert announcements and interviews of these bands as well.

Jeremy K's Retro Beach

The recent Regeneration Tour at Chastain Park Amphitheater was the perfect antidote to this year’s summer blues. Here’s my progress report on this spectacular Eighties event that Atlantan’s will more likely remember for years to come than say, the ‘other guy’s’ name in Wham!

If you missed the recent Regeneration Tour show at Chastain Park earlier this month, you may want to skip this entry and wait for my next one that will highlight some artists making their way soon to a local venue near you. I don’t want to guilt anyone with regret, but with all due respect, the show was simply phenomenal. Like Italian cellar wine, the bands assembled for this tour have been well preserved. Although they have given up the limo rides and are no longer accepting MTV video music awards, all four bands on this year’s tour played skillfully beyond their days of debuting singles on Casey Kasem’s Top 40 Countdown when playing live was a lip-synching expectancy.

Last year, the tour was nearly a sell-out under the stars of August Virgo. With the Human League and former Go-Go’s Belinda Carlisle headlining, it would be a hard title to dethrone. However, every band on this year’s version of the Regeneration Tour could have arguably rotated for the finale position at any of the 15 stops the tour made in America this year. Kicking off the evening in Atlanta, The Cutting Crew accelerated their half-hour time slot at a breathless rate, sounding polished and fresh with their manifested bubblegum-pop that has proudly surpassed late-night dedication status with a rockier, more mature driven set of arrangements that assimilates well with fans of the Eighties and today’s modern rock. Lead vocalist Nick van Eede struck every melody with a smile on his face as it was the Crew’s first appearance in Atlanta since 1987, when the Scottish-Canadian outfit joined Starship at the Southern Star Amphitheater (Six Flags) and cranked out their big US number one, “I just died in your arms”.

Out of the 4 bands appearing on the Regeneration Tour this year, only one of these acts has been truly reunited for the event. Guitarist / lead vocalist Jack Hues and song-writing partner / bassist Nick Feldman have begun the second phase of Wang Chung (a new record is forthcoming later this year) and initiated their return by blowing all expectations out of every arena hosting the tour this summer. It must be surreal to new wave audiences and flabbergasting to Wang Chung- now in their mid-50s, to think that America would be celebrating the Eighties and yelling “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” by the thousands in 2009. Hardly a one-hit-wonder, Wang Chung surprised the masses at Chastain with an entire collection of radio and dance hits that some ticket holders had never accredited the duo for. “Dance Hall Days’, “To Live and Die in LA”, and the Top 10 radio forgotten “Let’s Go!” sparked the physically conservative crowd to get up and shake it – regardless of the aches and pains that may have followed the next morning.

Terri Nunn, one of the genre’s most idyllic territory settlers of new wave, is unfortunately highly underrated. Terri’s band Berlin, albeit a reincarnation for this tour, benefited from the British Second Invasion of music by replicating the dominating synthesizer styles of Vince Clark, Thomas Dolby and Tony Mansfield. However, when you peel the layers back to reveal the band’s original core, the inquiry is “How well can Terri Nunn sing?” Let’s put that question to rest once and for all. Undoubtedly proven again, this time at Chastain Park, Terri Nunn has one of the strongest and yet flawless voices in music today. She is the Kelly Clarkson of the Eighties but rarely is she recognized for her projected choral power when discussing the ladies of the Eighties. Not only did she deliver Berlin’s anthology with vibrancy, she blended a cover of “I Feel Love” (Donna Summer) respectively with their racy club smash “Sex (I’m a …)” that went over like a summer storm across a quiet meadow. The applause meter was sure to be affected by neighborhood cheers after Terri and the new version of the LA-based quintet left the stage to make way for the evening’s third import, ABC.

ABC, making their third appearance to Atlanta since 2006, is becoming an essential act to see on the rising number of packaged retro tours each year. One of the decade’s most recognized icons, Martin Fry came out swinging like a boxer down on the count, flexing his vocal muscle against the other acts which had graced the stage earlier in the evening. Always a defender, ABC has survived nearly 30 years of creating pop music, making unashamed while ridiculous videos, and even a life-threatening cancer scare (Martin Fry was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease; now in remission since 1987) in 1985. Making up for lost time in the Eighties when the band never toured Atlanta, legions of fans have forgiven Fry and company; as the towering Englishman gave one of the most difficult performances of his life in the humid, heat-exhausting South. “Does it ever drop below hot here?” he asked. Decked in a trademark dapper suit, Martin flipped with commanding turbulence through the catalog of hits in a struggle to beat the merciless clock of the Chastain-curfew (11pm). In the closing minute of their mega-smash “Look of Love”, the venue’s sound system was disengaged and only the stage monitors could be heard as ABC gave the evening its final “Yippi-Yi-Yippi-Yi-Yay!” while fans’ vocals faded with the scattering ricochet of Martin Fry’s voice. Talk about a culmination, what better way to end this evening of monster jukebox Eighties’ hits than to abruptly pull the plug?
